The following is an interview with Aidan Trent of EveKnows. EveKnows is a true Porn 2.0 search engine in every sense of the word. We talk about Aidan’s porn search engine algorithm and his future outlook for EveKnows.

EroEvo: First, we’d like to know more about the genius behind this revolutionary porn search engine. Can you give us a brief bio and discuss your background in software development?

Aidan: I wouldn’t say EveKnows is a revolutionary adult search engine so much as an evolution in porn search technology. My background is in software usability, so with EveKnows I’ve tried to take the best elements of various search engines and cobble them together in a way that makes them intuitive for people to work with. I have a degree in Computer Science and a love for making computers easier to interact with; in fact, easing human-computer interaction has been my goal since the late ’90s. EveKnows is something of an experiment, in that regard. It seeks to create a friendly, easy-to-use, free porn site that anyone can use without fear of viruses or other malicious software.

EroEvo: Your search engine is named Eve and your crawler is named Caroline. Is there a significance behind these names?

Aidan: I like the idea of personalizing software, which is why the site has a human name in the title. The selection of ‘Eve’ over other names was mostly because I’d recently watched ‘All About Eve’ and thought it sounded cool. ‘Caroline’ actually does have some significance; it derives from Caroline of Brandenburg-Anspach, who corresponded with Leibniz in the early 18th century. Yes, I’m something of a history nerd.

EroEvo: From what I’ve seen so far, EveKnows is the best porn search engine on the internet. What gave you the idea to start the monumental task of creating a web 2.0 porn search engine?

Aidan: Thank you! Search technology has interested me for a while, but the success of Google has, I believe, rendered other general-purpose search engines redundant. Thus, I wanted to create a niche search engine. I ended up picking porn searching because it seemed under-served and the adult industry has historically had a reputation for being a dark, unfriendly corner of the Internet. Attempting to create a site that was friendly, inviting, and intuitive, given those constraints, seemed like a neat challenge. Of course, it also helped that at the time, I had no idea how much work would be involved.

EroEvo: It seems that you programmed EveKnows in Perl. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Perl for a search engine, and would you recommend it for others?

Aidan: The website interface and search spider are both written in Perl. Perl was designed for easy text processing, which makes it uniquely suited for search engines. The actual search engine back-end is written in C for fairly obvious optimization reasons. That language combination has worked very well for me, but I’m sure you could use other languages with equal success. PHP or Ruby could have been used for the interface, and the spider could easily have been written in just about any scripting language that includes HTTP support.

EroEvo: What is the biggest challenge in creating an algorithm for a porn search engine?

Aidan: Without a doubt, the biggest problem is categorizing each gallery. Users are interested in the photos and movies, but I can only efficiently index text. If the text isn’t accurate, the search results will be very poor. It took a while to find an appropriate way of balancing incoming text links, gallery titles, and embedded gallery text to give accurate search results.

A similar problem is keeping malicious web sites out of the search results. At its simplest, that could mean rejecting any galleries with iframes or scripting; this approach, however, ended up in missing a lot of safe galleries that used JavaScript for mouse-overs and such. Finding a metric for judging the safeness of a site’s JavaScript was a pretty challenging task.

EroEvo: Without any pay-for-placement links in the results, how do you plan on generating enough revenue with EveKnows to make a profit?

Aidan: There are banner advertisements beside the search results and sponsored text links below the ‘Popular Searches’ section of the main page. Obviously I don’t want to throw too many ads on the site, and this formula seems to strike a decent balance between keeping the site clean and keeping the server funded. I believe it’s incredibly important to not risk the integrity of the search results, so pay-for-placement can never be an option.

EroEvo: What is your future outlook (near and far) for EveKnows?

Aidan: I’m always playing around with the code. Usually that means adjustments to Caroline so that she finds better galleries, which results in better searches. In the longer term, I’m working on adding the ability to search more types of media than just photos and video clips.

The following is an interview with the founder of Screwphone, which is one of the first sites to exclusively feature iPhone porn. We talk about the development of Screwphone and an outlook on the portable porn market.

EroEvo: Could you briefly summarize what Screwphone is?

Screwphone: Screwphone is an exclusive iPhone/iPod Touch porn video site. Focusing on user generated (uploaded) video content converted into Quicktime files for the iPhone/iPod touch.

EroEvo: The development blog says that Screwphone is built with Ruby on Rails. What are the advantages of building an iPhone porn website with Rails? And why do we see considerably less porn sites running on rails compared to mainstream sites?

Screwphone: The first and foremost primary advantage of developing with Ruby on Rails is simply the amount of time it saves you. Screwphone has a total of 6 hours of development under its belt and it’s already highly usable. I personally believe that we see less porn sites running on rails simply because the majority of the porn sites out there are not custom built. They’re using a purchased PHP script or something similar to kick it off and instead are focusing on the content of the site. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but not a route I wanted to take. I want the experience of screwphone to be so smooth it’s worth coming back to.

Some people think that scaling Ruby on Rails is hard. Well, I think they’re full of shit. Scaling anything is just a matter of good engineering design from the start and having enough money to throw hardware at it.. 99% of the time it doesn’t matter though because their site never actually sees that type of traffic anyway.

EroEvo: From what I understand, your target audience will be limited to those who own iPhones. Or is your website able to be viewed from other handheld devices as well (PSP, iPod, etc.)? Anyway, is this enough demand to make your venture worthwhile?

Screwphone: Exclusivity is a good thing in this case. As you and your readers know, the porn 2.0 advertising business model can be a bit weak. That’s partly because there is no intent or unifying purpose for the traffic. As a publisher, the only thing you know about the user is that they like porn. By limiting our user base to just iPhone/iPod Touch visitors, we’re able to introduce another common element: they’re all Apple users. From a publishing perspective, that gives us significantly more room to deliver relevant ads. We also know they were willing to purchase a $400 or more mobile phone. Those two themes will work dramatically in our favor.

I want to nail down this target market so tightly that it is embodied by screwphone. Porn on your iPhone needs to be synonymous with screwphone by the time I’m done.

EroEvo: One of our biggest worries about Porn 2.0 websites is surviving with a weak business model. How do you plan on monetizing Screwphone? Can you effectively serve ads on an iPhone?

Screwphone: Will ads be effective on the iPhone? I’m not sure yet. Screwphone is one huge experiment in my mind and I’m loving every minute of it. I built the site entirely for myself, and if it turns out that I can’t make enough money to cover the hosting costs I’ll say fuck it and make it an invite only service.

Speaking of porn advertising - why hasn’t anyone tried product placement yet? You know, a bird is using her favorite toy and then in the middle of it looks up at the camera and mentions a URL or something? Or the name of the toy she’s using? That could be a hilarious viral hit in my opinion. What I’m trying to say is it feels like the porn industry is limiting itself to what it already knows. It should be taking on more mainstream marketing tactics instead. Enough of the flashing banner ads and tantalizing adult friend finder ads that always get my geographic location wrong. Let’s see some real experimentation.

I think the main problem is 99% of the content producers are like the record companies: trying to salvage a business model that is quickly shrinking. It’s not going to die. It never will. But it is going to get smaller. DVDs are way too expensive.

Then you have the bottom feeders — affiliate weenies — that post galleries and run crap spammy video sites that use underhanded tactics to get click throughs that don’t convert at all. Those guys just need to go away completely. They don’t contribute whatsoever - they just take away traffic from legitimate sites.

The industry has to start evolving more quickly. It’s been resting on its ass for the last few years and now it needs to play catchup with new mainstream social developments.

EroEvo: Who are some of the other current contenders in the iPhone porn market, and how does Screwphone distinguish itself?

Screwphone: Competition? I have no idea. I don’t really care either. I’m not interested in a feature race. I am interested in building a sustainable brand though. Screwphone — and we haven’t even launched yet — is the ultimate iPhone porn site for movies. We’ll always have free movies and a clean interface. We’re not interested in bullshit hidden links, ads splattered all over the place or anything that detracts from the experience. When you come to screwphone, you know exactly what you’re getting. And hopefully when you’re done jerking off you’ll click through and buy a bluetooth headset or something.

The funny thing about competition is that once you subtract the idiots who don’t work very hard and the people who aren’t as good as you - it shrinks dramatically.

In short: We want to be undeniably good. I’m building something that kicks ass and people won’t be able to help but notice..

EroEvo: Finally, what is your personal outlook on portable porn?

Screwphone: We’re way early in the bell curve for portable porn. The iPhone/iPod touch are the first truly mass market handheld devices to take advantage of high quality multimedia. We’re only going to see more innovation in this space from here on out.

Porn fell behind when it came to web 2.0, but I’m not going to let that happen when it comes to porn on portables..

Here is an interview with Jacky Joy, who is infamous at Penn State University for her part-time porn star profession. Contrary to what you might expect, the professors mention their encounters with Jacky with glorification, and you see male students browsing Jacky Joy photos during class in the computer labs. It’s not everyday that you get to share a classroom with an internet porn star.

Jacky Joy’s Name Origin

I’m not going to disclose your real name on here, but you use the alias “Jacky Joy” in the porn industry. Why did you choose this name?

Haha, well the name came out of my first porn name which was Joey. I started with the name Joey and hated it for some reason. I thought I needed something different and not so common so i chose Jacky. The Joy part came from my first agent Adultfaces.com, he was like “Why not have a name similar to Jenna Jameson?” So Jacky Joy came about.

Jacky’s Featured Websites

Before we get too far into the interview, can you tell me what websites that I can find you on? I’ll become a paid member as soon as you drop the name.

Well, one you can Google my name and movies will come up, but i have them on:

Eat Some Ass: www.eatsomeass.com

I Shoot Porn: www.ishootporn.com

Hush Hush Entertainment: www.hushhushentertainment.com

Ruth Blackwell: www.ruthblackwell.com

These are some of the websites I’m on..then I also have a lot of DVD’s out too.

The Official Website

I see that www.jackyjoy.com is already a registered domain name. Were you smart enough think ahead and register this name when you created your alias? And tell me about your personal website www.jackyjoyxxx.com.

Well the Jackyjoy.com is not my personal site, so please if possible DO NOT REGISTER that one.. because someone bought my name and is using my shit when they’re not supposed to. But my site will come out soon. Also Jackyjoyxxx.com is my personal escorting site. Yes you can have me for yourself for a price. lol

Penn State Porn Star

So you’re notorious at Penn State University by being known as the “Penn State Porn Star”… Can you briefly explain how you got into the porn business and how everyone at school found out about your work?

Well I got into this business by being on the notorious site called Myspace. Someone by the name of Mike for exploitedteens.com found me there and i did a site for him. SO from there i found an agent and did more like bangbus.com and exploitedteens.com too.

The reason everyone knows about me is because apparently guys have alot of time on their hand at school and look at bangbus a lot! Ha. So ya, I was considered the Bgirl Shuffle on that site and then the rumors started and I became popular.

Porn and Information Technology

Now, going to the main purpose of this interview, our blog’s theme is information technology, but we can be general and discuss technology in the broad sense. As a porn star, do you find yourself exposed to technology in any way? Also, how is being a porn star in 2007 different than it was 10 years ago?

Exposed to technology? I would say all the way. The reason is because I have to keep up with my websites at all times, so if it wasn’t for the internet I don’t think we would have a lot of internet-based porn. Which would make me not have a lot of money or make me known like I am today. Also, porn from 10 years ago and now 2007 is soo different because internet is more used today than back in the day. More work is provided today than 10 years ago.

Keeping Up With The Game

Obviously, everyone in the porn industry, including you, is trying to keep up or stay ahead of the rapidly developing technology associated with production and distribution. I see that you have your own website, so what are you doing and what do you plan on doing with that to stay on track?

Well, first, the jackyjoy.com is not my internet site. So really I’m doing nothing. But when I do get my site up and running it will be a lot of making movies once a month and taking pictures once a month to keep up my site and keep it updated and running. Then there is managing money, but that’s a whole another story…

Contact Jacky Joy

Lastly, explain all the services you offer. Will you give me a private lap dance if the price is right? And how can others go about contacting you?

Well I do do privates, You can either contact me personally through babyaj2785@yahoo.com or contact jackyjoyxxx.com and fill out the resume so you can have a private. And yes if the price is right I’d do a lot of things. Though usually I’m expensive like in the 1,000 dollars for an hour. lol
