I just signed up for a Boobik account and had the chance to explore it a bit. Boobik closely resembles Twitter, but it focuses as a microblogging service for adults. What this means is that you can post about porn, sex and other dirty thoughts without the fear of apprehension from what might be an otherwise uptight mainstream community. Boobik claims that it offers a “sexy way” to meet and communicate with other users on the site. I am not sure whether this suggests that it is a new variation of online dating or a method of communicating pornographic material.
You would agree with me in saying that Boobik is an odd name. If anything, the word “boob” suggests that it is an adult-themed website. But I wanted to know if the name has a meaning. Boobik replied that “Boobik” is a nickname for a loved one, like the common words “honey” or “darling.” I never heard of this before, so I guess Boobik is trying to invent new slang.
As far as features go, Boobik is not merely an uncreative clone of Twitter. Boobik allows you to write 3 different types of posts: text, picture and video. You can directly upload a photo from your desktop or also copy & paste video embed code from a porn tube. This is an essential feature for a NSFW microblogging service because it allows members to share porn in a fun and easy way.
Another cool feature is Boobik can notify you via SMS or IM when someone you are “spying” posts something new or someone comments on your posts.
Boobik has a lot of potential as an emerging Porn 2.0 application. The creator promises personal messages, chatrooms, and a full-fledged API in the near future.
There are still some major kinks that the Boobik team has to work out though. I am using the standard Safari browser, and the AJAX in the signup script did not respond after I clicked submit. Also, I continue to get timeout errors while browsing the site.
Let’s also hope that the Boobik design gets revamped. That interface is blocky and ugly while the harsh orange color just stings your eyes like citrus juice.
Meanwhile, I plan on using Boobik for EroEvo in the same way mainstream bloggers use Twitter. Follow me on the EroEvo Boobik page.
