At first sight, GEXO looks like another YouPorn clone. As of today, GEXO offers 1,008 hours of free streaming porn videos taking up a whopping 206 GB of hard disk space. Damn, that’s a lot of free porn! And just like YouPorn, GEXO has a Top Rated and Channels pages to make more efficient navigation of their extensive video library.

But the difference is the outward transparency of the website. YouPorn has a simple frontend for viewing porn, but there is not an easy means of communication with the development team besides a particular gmail address flopping around the site. It seems that YouPorn’s team wants to keep it that way, to. From reading the Portfolio.com article and the Wikipedia entry, it is obvious that the moguls behind the scenes of YouPorn want to remain anonymous, and that is exactly the impression one gets while using their product. YouPorn gives you your daily fix of porn and you should not complain, right?

On the contrary, GEXO gives off a different, nicer vibe that is more attributable to a tech startup. I am impressed by their regularly updated News Blog that shows what’s going on at GEXO, such as technical difficulties, server upgrades, new features added…

Plus, GEXO is constantly improvising with the user demand by adding new features. GEXO’s most unique feature is the private lock on user uploaded videos. They have discovered a workaround for the copyright laws that are beating the hell out of PornoTube and YouPorn:

Today, we’ve added a new feature called “Private Storage”.

This will ensure 100% privacy when desired. When your uploaded movie’s privacy settings are set to “Private Storage” only you can view the video - only when you are logged in.

This serves two things:

a) Now you can use GEXO to upload your porn collection to our servers , so that you can watch your porn on-the-go , without sharing it with the world.

b) Because we are being contacted almost daily from the rightful copyright owners, we are forced to take down the reported videos. Lately, a lot of users were uploading videos they’ve gotten from paysites. We’ve decided, that deleting these would not be nice, because maybe some of you are already using GEXO for online storage. We will instead move these videos to your Private Storages so that public cannot view them, and you will not be breaking copyright laws.

GEXO’s profit model is embedded affiliate offers. They integrated these affiliate deals perfectly. When you load a video sponsored by a paysite like Handjob Models or VideosZ, the relevant affiliate banners shows above the video. This exponentially increases the likelihood of a conversion because if the user likes the video, he will go the distance to pay for the full length videos on the official pay site.

But GEXO’s affiliate advertisement strategy contradicts what is stated on the About page:

When GEXO was launched the first time ever - on January 18th, 2007 , its main focus was to offer the world an adult tube site free of advertisements.

GEXO also has a “DVDs” page which is actually a cleverly mocked up VideosZ affiliate store. VideosZ is a popular “Video on Demand” website where subscribers can watch streaming proprietary adult DVDs. VideosZ has an affiliate program that autogenerates a custom storefront for their affiliates. So GEXO is simply placing that storefront in a frame to sell their users commission-earning DVDs under the guise of “GEXO DVD’s in association with VideosZ.”
